Planning process for shale gas development

The site operator has to demonstrate to the Environment Agency that they have taken steps to protect local water courses, including groundwater resources. They also make sure that the operator is treating and disposing of waste water properly and that any emissions into the atmosphere are controlled. The operator will also have to show how they will handle any naturally occurring radioactive materials.
