About the scheme

We are working with Via East Midlands to deliver improvement works to the A6097/Kirk Hill Junction. This is one of five junction improvements on the A614/A6097 Major Road Network (MRN) corridor funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) and NCC.

The scheme at Kirk Hill will include the enlargement of the existing A6097/Kirk Hill signal-controlled junction at East Bridgford.

These works will be delivered by Danaher & Walsh as the principal contractor.

Why are works needed at Kirk Hill?

The A6097/Kirk Hill junction at East Bridgford is an existing traffic-signal controlled junction. The A6097 Bridgford Street runs northwest to southeast, with Kirk Hill joining from the north providing access to East Bridgford village, and East Bridgford Road providing access to Newton village from the south.

  • Junction is currently over capacity in morning and afternoon/evening peaks.
  • Queue lengths greater than 1,000m are currently observed in the afternoon and evening peak.
  • By 2041 – things will only worsen. Junction modelling predicts delays of six minutes per vehicle at the junction.
  • The junction is required to support RAF Newton development (650 homes) — Planning conditions tied to the Kirk Hill junction upgrade.
  • The limited provision for pedestrians and cyclists creates safety concerns.

What’s happening at Kirk Hill?

The scheme will widen the A6097 through the junction, creating an additional lane in each direction.

This extra capacity will help traffic flow more smoothly before the road the road tapers back to one lane further along the route.

The right‑turn lanes into Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will also be widened, giving drivers more space and reducing the build‑up of vehicles waiting to turn.

New road markings will be introduced in the centre of the junction to make right‑turn movements safer and easier. These changes will support vehicles turning out of Kirk Hill towards the A6097 northbound, as well as those turning out of East Bridgford Road towards the A6097 southbound.

A new traffic signal system will better manage the flow of vehicles, while upgraded street lighting will enhance visibility for all road users.

Drainage will be updated to suit the new road layout, and essential utility diversions will take place to make room for the widened carriageway. The scheme also renews the footpath along Kirk Hill and upgrades the bridleway crossing, improving access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

Enabling - July 2026:

  • Site setup works will begin.
  • The site compound will be constructed.
  •  Pre-construction archaeology will take place.

Phase one - August to September 2026: 

  • Removal of splitter islands.
  • Earthworks and utility diversions will begin.
  • Existing lighting columns on one side of the road will be removed.
  • Traffic signals will be removed.
  • An access route will be confirmed before the closure.

Traffic management:

  • Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will be closed.
  • There will be occasions where two-way lights on the A6097 are present are present within off-peak hours.
  • There will be occasions where full overnight road closures are present.
  • Five consecutive overnight closures on the A6097 between Gunthorpe Bridge and the A46 will be in place between Monday 21 September and the morning of Saturday 26 September. A signed diversion route will be in place via the A46, A617, A614 and the A6097.

Phase two: October 2026 to February 2027:

  • Civil and drainage works will continue.

Traffic management: 

  • Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will remain closed.
  • There will be occasions where two-way signals on the A6097 are present within off-peak hours.
  • There will be occasions where full overnight road closures are present.

Phase three A: February - April 2027

  • Civil and drainage works will continue.
  • Statutory utility diversions completed.

Traffic management:

  • A southbound contraflow system will be in place on the A6097
  • Two-way signals will be in place for southbound traffic.

Phase three b/four: March - June 2027

  • Central splitters will be constructed and there will be a split traffic flow.

Traffic management:

  • Two-way lights will be required for southbound traffic.

Phase five: June - August 2027

  • Final surfacing will be laid.
  • White lining works will begin.
  • High friction surfacing will be laid.
  • Landscaping works will take place including planting and seeding of all disturbed verge areas.

Traffic management:

  • A full night-time road closure will be needed on the A6097.

What time will you be doing works?

The majority of the works will take place in the daytime Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm.
