Kirk Hill frequently asked questions

What is happening at Kirk Hill?

The scheme will widen the A6097 through the junction, creating an additional lane in each direction.

This extra capacity will help traffic flow more smoothly before the road the road tapers back to one lane further along the route.

The right‑turn lanes into Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will also be widened, giving drivers more space and reducing the build‑up of vehicles waiting to turn.

New road markings will be introduced in the centre of the junction to make right‑turn movements safer and easier. These changes will support vehicles turning out of Kirk Hill towards the A6097 northbound, as well as those turning out of East Bridgford Road towards the A6097 southbound.

A new traffic signal system will better manage the flow of vehicles, while upgraded street lighting will enhance visibility for all road users.

Drainage will be updated to suit the new road layout, and essential utility diversions will take place to make room for the widened carriageway. The scheme also renews the footpath along Kirk Hill and upgrades the bridleway crossing, improving access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

When are the works happening and how long will they take?

The archaeology works started on Monday 20 July 2026. The main junction works will start in late-August and they will take around one year to complete, with works estimated to be finished by August 2027.

What time of day will you be doing the works?

The majority of the works will take place in the daytime Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm.

Where works take place on a Saturday, this will be between 7:30am and 1pm.

Any overnight works will take place between 10pm and 6am.

I use Kirk Hill Road regularly? Will it be closed for the whole 12 months?

The works require a full closure to safely construct the new junction layout, drainage, utilities and bridleway improvements. The closure duration is driven by the scale of the scheme and safety requirements.

I live in East Bridgford, how can I access the village?

During the closure, the main access into the village will be by using Butt Lane and Main Street.

How can I travel by bus during the works?

The closure of Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road means that the Rushcliffe Villager can no longer Shelford and Gunthorpe. 

The Rushcliffe Villager will still serve East Bridgford and will follow the diversion route into and out of the village via Butts Lane, using Holloway Close to turn around.

You can hail the bus from anywhere along the Cross Lane and Holloway Close section of the route. 

Passengers in Shelford and Gunthorpe will instead be served by eight additional journeys Monday to Saturday on the Nottsbus 747 service. 

If you live in Shelford and Gunthorpe and want to travel into East Bridgford, Bingham and Nottingham, you will need to board the 747 and change onto the Rushcliffe Villager in Radcliffe on Trent. 

We are working closely with trentbarton to make sure that tickets can be accepted on both buses.

If you board the 747 in Shelford or Gunthorpe you can tell the driver that you’re intending to connect onto the villager or the mainline and you will be given a free journey on the 747. If you board the 747 in Radcliffe on Trent towards Shelford or Gunthorpe and tell the driver you have connected from either the villager or the mainline, you will also travel on the 747 for free.

Are traffic lights planned at Butt Lane / Fosse Way?

Temporary traffic control at Butt Lane is under consideration to manage peak‑time flows. Final arrangements will be communicated before works begin.

Will Trent Lane be reopened during the works to help ease traffic?

Trent Lane is currently closed for safety reasons. There are no plans to reopen this route for general traffic during the construction of the Kirk Hill scheme, however this has been raised and our network management team are reviewing this.

I’m worried that Brunts Lane will become a rat run. How will you prevent this? 

Brunts Lane is a restricted byway and will remain closed to vehicles throughout the construction. We will install temporary signage and will continue to monitor this to discourage vehicles from travelling along the route.

Why can you not open Brunts Lane for outbound traffic and useTrent Lane for inbound traffic? 

Both Brunts Lane and Trent Lane have safety, legal and geometric constraints which prevent them from being used as diversion routes during the Kirk Hill works. We are reviewing these issues following feedback from residents at the meet the contractor event and will be providing an update in the near future.

Will there be a right-turn filter from Kirk Hill?

Our design team is reviewing the phasing of traffic signals and lane arrangements to improve right-turn capacity following feedback from a number of residents. We will provide an update on this in the near future. 

Will the new layout fix congestion at the Kirk Hill junction?

The scheme is designed to improve safety and reduce congestion, but right‑turn movements remain a key issue raised by residents. Signal timings and lane markings are being reviewed to maximise capacity.

What will happen to the Toot Hill School buses (N49/N50)? 

We have worked closely with local bus operators to confirm temporary routes and pick up points and if you’re affected by this we would recommend speaking directly with the bus operator. 

I’m worried that the existing parking issues on Main Street will only be made worse during the construction. What are you going to do about this?

We know that traffic volumes may increase during the closure and our highways safety team is currently reviewing the possibility of a temporary one-way system on Monday Street and Cherry Holt.

Brunts Lane is dangerous if used as a shortcut, how will this be controlled? 

Access to Brunts Lane is currently a restricted byway and this will continue during the works. We will make sure that additional signage and enforcement is in place to stop motorists using this as a shortcut.

Will increased traffic create safety risks near the school? 

We are currently assessing the impacts of traffic during school hours and if needed, we will introduce additional measures.
