How to write accessible web content

This guidance explains how to write accessible content for council websites. This includes on webpages and in online documents such as Word or PDF files.

It helps everyone, including people with disabilities, access council information online.

Use this guidance if you write, edit or publish content for our websites. The three key basics for writing accessible web content are:

  • Headings and structure – help people find and understand information.
  • Readability – makes sure text and other content can be understood, including with assistive tools like screen readers.
  • Hyperlinks – help people navigate links and understand where they go.

Getting started

Experienced users can go straight to the section they need for detailed guidance, while beginners should start with readable web content.

Guidance on creating content in specific formats is available at How to create accessible content.
