What accessible content is

People may not have a choice when using our websites, so our content must work for everyone. Content includes anything we publish online for people to read, watch, listen to or interact with.

About 1 in 4 people have a long-term illness, impairment, or disability that may affect how they access digital information. Many more have temporary or situational access needs.

Making content accessible helps everyone read, understand and use our information online, whatever their abilities, circumstances, device or technology.

It also helps the council meet UK accessibility requirements. Meeting these requirements means we:

  • help people access services on any device and complete tasks online
  • meet our legal duties under the Equality Act 2010
  • improve council services for all residents

If you are new to accessibility, start with Why accessible web content matters to understand the basics.
