What accessible content is

This guidance explains what accessible content is and why it matters. It also explains what content needs to be accessible, the rules and standards we follow, and who is responsible for making it accessible.

People may not have a choice when using our websites, so our content must work for everyone. Content includes anything we publish online that people can read, watch, listen to or interact with.

About 1 in 4 people have a long-term illness, impairment, or disability that may affect how they access digital information. Many more have temporary or situational access needs.

Making content accessible helps everyone read, understand and use our information online, whatever their abilities, circumstances, device or technology.

It also helps the council meet UK accessibility requirements. Meeting these requirements:

  • make services usable on any device so people can complete tasks online
  • improve services for all residents
  • help fulfil our legal responsibilities
