Using images in web content
People experience online images differently
People experience images online differently compared to print:
- Partially-sighted users, or those using smaller screens like mobile devices, may need screen magnification to see information in an image.
- Users who have problems seeing colours may find images with very low or very high contrast hard to see.
- Visually impaired users who cannot see an image may use a screen reader or other assistive technology to understand the image by reading it's alt (alternative) text.
- Some users find images distracting - they may block them, leaving only an image's alt text visible.
- People with a poor internet connection or slow devices may also block images so pages load faster.
You must make sure an image you use in online content can be understood by those who can and can't see it.
