Using images in content

People experience images differently online

People experience images differently online compared to print:

  • Partially-sighted users, or those using smaller screens, may need screen magnification to see image information clearly.
  • Users who have problems seeing colours may find images with very low or very high contrast hard to see.
  • Users who cannot see or interpret an image may use a screen reader or other assistive technology to understand it through reading its alternative (alt) text.
  • Some users find images distracting and may block them, leaving only an image's alt text visible.
  • People with a poor internet connection or slow devices may also block images so pages load faster.

You must make sure essential information in an image can be understood by those who can and cannot see it.
