The National Moment of Reflection

A National Moment of Reflection took place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September 2022, the night before the state funeral, marked by a one-minute silence.

The silence was marked by people privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps and the street with neighbours, and at locally arranged community events and vigils.

Community groups, clubs and other organisations across the country took part and people overseas were also encouraged to observe the one-minute silence at 8pm local time.

The Lying-in-State

During the Lying-in-State period, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s closed coffin rested on a raised platform, called a catafalque, inside Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminster (also known as the Houses of Parliament).

The Lying-in-State opened to the public at 5pm on Wednesday 14 September 2022 for 24 hours a day, and closed at 6.30am on Monday 19 September 2022.

Large numbers of members of the public filed past the catafalque to pay their respects.
