Network North highway maintenance 2024
Nottinghamshire County Council welcomes the highways maintenance funding increase, made possible by reallocated HS2 funding.
The UK Government has redirected HS2 funding totalling £8.3 billion over an eleven-year period from 2023/24 to 2033/34, to support the biggest-ever road resurfacing programme across England.
The government anticipates that this will lead to a long-term, transformation in the condition of local highway authority roads for road users up and down the country and will improve journeys for all and provide long-term certainty for Local Authorities.
Introducing innovation
As an authority, we constantly strive for innovation in managing, planning, and maintaining highways assets.
The authority has been working to incorporate in situ recycling technologies into our highway maintenance and have undertaken recent trials. This method can provide many benefits including less disposal of materials, less use of quarried materials, time savings and reduced lorry movements on site.
An area the authority is considering for future innovation is the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) assisted video surveying technology. The functionality it provides will allow us to move away from UK Pavement Management Systems (UKPMS) user manual [PDF] surveys. This will provide us with greater, more timely insights into the current condition of the highway network.
Working with utilities
In 2020, the authority moved to a Streetworks Permit Scheme to exert much greater control on utility activity on the network. The results from the first 4 years show significant improvements in the co-ordination and inspection of works and the opportunities for collaborative working, especially with forthcoming roadworks which are actively promoted.
