Over 16 school and college travel passes

We run a travel scheme to enable all students over 16 to get education.

Before you apply to join, consider which local transport services and ticketing/fare schemes are available - the Traveline journey planner can help you plan a route and get information about public transport services.

Who can join?

To join you must be:

  • a Nottinghamshire County resident (excludes students living in Nottingham City)
  • attending a full time course at a school, College or Independent Specialist Provider that’s funded by the Education Funding Agency (the scheme doesn’t apply to Higher Education courses or Universities)

And either:

  • over compulsory school age but under 19 on 1 September 2018
  • continuing to attend a course which started before you were 19, until either it’s completed or you reach 25 years old - whichever is sooner
  • If you’ve undergone a statutory assessment of need, i.e. Education Health and Care Plan, and you’re between 19 and 24 years old on 1 September 2018

Apply

Full conditions of the scheme and details of how to apply are included in the Post-16 Travel Scheme booklet. Please ensure you have read these documents before completing an application form:

Applications are assessed by officers of the Council’s Transport and Travel Services Group.

Pay

Once you have applied for assistance the Travel & Transport team will write to you with the outcome.  If you have applied for a half fare pass or a season pass the letter will include a quote to pay before the bus pass will be issued to you.

Types of travel assistance you can apply for:

A Half Fare Pass

This costs £120 per academic year and entitles you to travel at half the adult fare on a bus or train service to their school or college (currently not available on the tram). The pass can only be used on the specified bus services, for one journey to and from school or college each day before 10pm, Monday to Friday during term time. Full payment is required when you apply.

A Season Pass

This is available to students travelling on specific school bus services and other services arranged by Nottinghamshire County Council. This will allow the student to travel between home and school/college without having to pay a daily fare. The travel pass can only be used on the specific bus service for one journey to and from school/college each day, started before 10pm, Monday to Friday during term time. If you indicate on the application form that you would like a season pass, a price quote will be sent to you. The price is calculated on half the adult fare plus the £120 charge. Students who purchase this pass may then travel without further daily payment on the specified service. You may pay for the season pass in full or by instalments as follows:

  • initial payment to be made when you accept the quote
  • 2nd instalment by 1 December 2018
  • 3rd instalment by 1 March 2019

Travel Allowance

Up to a maximum of £150 per academic year may be offered in exceptional circumstances instead of a half fare travel or season pass. This may be where no public transport or other services provided by the Council exist or where the school or college is outside the Nottinghamshire boundary. Assistance will be limited to a maximum of 25 miles travelling distance and 75 minutes travelling time. All travel allowances are paid termly in arrears and attendance must be certified by the school or college. Students sharing the same vehicle will be paid half the travel allowance each. Late applications made after the start of the academic year will result in a reduction in the amount of grant available.

Special transport needs

The usual three mile distance criterion will be waived for students who have been assessed by the county council as having a special transport need.

There are some further entitlements and additional benefits available for pupils with a disability or special educational needs.

We’ll make every effort to provide the necessary transport services but cannot guarantee to do so and will identify the most appropriate and cost effective transport service for each student. The arrangement may not offer choice of operator, route or service except where these are available and there is no extra cost to us.
