Council Tax

Paying Council Tax

Council Tax is collected by district councils, not by the County council.

Your district council:

  • sends out your Council Tax bill
  • works out if you are entitled to any discounts or benefits
  • collects your Council Tax
  • offers advice if you are having trouble paying

Once the money has been collected, your district council keeps its share of the money and distributes the rest to the other agencies, including the County council.

Council Tax bands

The amount of Council Tax you pay depends on the value of the house you live in.

Every house has been put into one of eight bands, based on the value of the house on 1 April 1991.

The eight bands are A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. The cheapest houses are in band A and the most expensive houses are in band H.

Approximately 60% of houses in Nottinghamshire are in bands A and B.

Adult social care precept

The adult social care precept was introduced by the government to help support the cost of providing adult social care services. The government expects all County councils who have responsibility for providing adult social care services to levy the precept. Government funding calculations assume that the precept has been levied in full at a rate of 2%.

Investing in social care helps ease the strain on under-pressure NHS services and provides better outcomes for people, helping them to retain independence and reduce the chances of having to access acute care in hospital.

Nottinghamshire County Council's increase in adult social care precept for 2025/26 is 2% which will raise £9.8m.

The precept is included in your Council Tax bill so is collected as part of your usual Council Tax payments.

Your Council Tax

For 2025/26, in addition to the 2% increase in adult social care precept, general Council Tax has been increased by 2.84% to help fund all of the services the County council provides.

We cannot say exactly how much your total Council Tax bill is because we do not decide the total amount.

The County council's part of your Council Tax bill for 2025/26 is as follows:

Band Council Tax 2025/26
A £1,263.03
B £1,473.53...
C £1,684.04
D £1,894.54
E £2,315.55
F £2,736.56
G £3,157.57
H £3,789.08

Your total Council Tax helps to pay for local public services provided by:

  • Nottinghamshire County Council
  • Nottinghamshire Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner
  • Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • your district council
  • your parish or town council (if you have one)

Other agencies

Payments to the other agencies need to be added to these figures to give the total amount. We, the police and the fire service charge the same amount across the whole county. Each district and parish council set its own amount and so the total bill will be different in each area.
