Animal feed and pet food

Trading Standards is responsible for enforcing animal feed legislation within Nottinghamshire. This ensures that animal feeds are safe from the start to the end of the feed chain.

We enforce a variety of animal feed legislation. Collectively these outline detailed requirements for the manufacturing and marketing of animal feed. The legislation is not specific to farmed animals. It extends to feed for wild animals as well as pet animals. The overriding themes of all the legislation is that the feed must be safe and compliant.

To ensure that feed businesses in Nottinghamshire meet their legal obligations, we:

  • inspect feed businesses using a risk-based methodology. These include arable farms, manufacturers, retailers, transporters and livestock farms
  • conduct sampling activities at various stages of the feed chain
  • offer guidance and support to help businesses comply with legal requirements
  • maintain an up-to-date register of all feed businesses
  • conduct investigations into reports of non-compliant and unsafe feed

If you have any animal feed or pet food issues to report, please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
