Vans at recycling centres
From 2 January 2027, there will be new rules for vans visiting our recycling centres.
This is part of our work to tackle trade waste abuse at sites across the county.
What are the new rules for vans?
Residents who own vans will:
- need to re-register their vehicle to use our sites,
- need to book an appointment to use their van at one of our recycling centres.
- be limited to six visits to our sites per year. This will refresh annually in April.
- not be permitted to use our centres if their vehicle is a luton van, a box van, a flat bed or a vehicle which exceeds 3.5 tonnes in gross vehicle weight.
Appointments
Appointments will be booked either online or by calling our customer services centre.
The booking portal will open in December 2026 for appointments from 2 January 2027.
Three sites will be available for appointments each day and every recycling centre in Nottinghamshire will be available on a rota every four days.
From 2 January, van owners will be turned away from sites if they do not have a pre-booked appointment.
Why are these changes being made?
We want to strengthen existing measures to prevent trade waste at recycling centres, reduce costs of disposing of trade waste and improve customer experience for residents.
Trade waste is not accepted at recycling centres but 2024/25 tonnage data suggests that Nottinghamshire had 70% more garden waste, 75% more plasterboard, 86% more rubble and 63% more wood, chipboard and MDF compared to Derbyshire, costing the county council an additional £1.6million in disposal costs.
