All about the changes to recycling

What is Simpler Recycling?

The government has introduced Simpler Recycling as a way to improve recycling rates across England, to reach 65% recycling target by 2035.

The Simpler Recycling legislation means that recycling collections will become more consistent so that everyone can recycle the same core materials wherever they live in England.

How will this be paid for?

The government is providing some additional funding to councils to help pay for the changes. In addition, as part of the reforms, the government is making the producers of packaging financially responsible for the disposal of packaging materials they place on shop shelves. This means that in the future, producers must help fund waste and recycling services provided by local councils rather than this being a cost to the tax payer.

What does this mean for me?

This is great news as you will be able to recycle more in your recycling bin at home. Get the full list of items you can recycle at home

When will the changes be made?

You will be able to put the additional recyclable items in your recycling bin from 31 March 2026.

Why can’t everything go in one bin?

Under the Simpler Recycling legislation, councils still have the flexibility to deliver these changes in the most appropriate way for their area, providing the best value for money. In Nottinghamshire, that is by having a separate kerbside glass collection.

My friend who lives in a different county has one bin for all their recycling. Why is the guidance for Nottinghamshire different to other local authorities?

When are food waste collections starting?

Nottinghamshire District and Boroughs have a transitional arrangement in place with Defra which means that food waste collections will start in Nottinghamshire in October 2027. This will be a weekly food waste collection.
