The benefits of electric vehicles (EVs)

Five reasons to choose an electric vehicle

1. EVs are cost-effective

The price of brand-new EVs can be higher than their internal combustion engine (ICE) equivalent. However, the increase in EV uptake, dealership price matching and government incentives continue to contribute to falling prices. Auto Trader report that over the last year, prices of EVs have fallen by 11% in comparison to ICE vehicles.

The UK’s second-hand EV market is also growing, with sales rising by 58.5% year-on-year from 2024 to 2025. Estimates suggest that the average price of a used EV in the UK has dropped by £7,411 in just two years, marking a 24.35% price decline. In fact, analysis shows the average EV is around 8.5% cheaper than an ICE counterpart at three years old, and 14% cheaper at four years old.

Depending on where and what speed an EV is charged, it can cost as little as 2p per mile, compared to an average cost of 15p per mile for an ICE vehicle.

2. The public charging network is growing

The UK’s EV charging infrastructure is quickly growing, with over 82,000 public chargepoints now available nationwide. In April 2025, a public chargepoint was installed every 29 minutes in the UK!

With chargepoints continuing to pop up across the country, charging an EV has never been easier and more convenient for drivers. Initiatives like the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) project will soon see chargepoints installed in residential areas, ensuring availability for those who can’t charge at home.

3. Government incentives are providing great value for money

4. Battery improvements

EV batteries, particularly those in newer models, are showing significantly slower degradation rates, often around 1.8% per year, according to a 2024 study by Geotab.  This translates to a battery with a 300-mile range losing only around 27 miles of range over five years, according to Fleet Europe.

5. Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions

One of the main advantages of electric vehicles might seem obvious, but it’s not to be overlooked: the environmental benefits. Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions and generally contribute less atmospheric pollutants across their lifetime in comparison to their internal combustion engine (ICE) alternatives.  Fewer pollutants in our atmosphere will help improve the local air quality in Nottinghamshire and will enable communities to become healthier and cleaner.
