How much does EV charging cost at home?

  • Charging your EV at home is generally much cheaper than using public charge points, as home electricity is exempt from VAT charges.
  • Some energy providers offer dedicated EV tariffs, with rates as low as 6.7p/kWh. Check with your current supplier to see what EV tariffs they offer
  • Use the Zapmap Home Charge Calculator to estimate your costs

Tethered verses untethered home chargers

  • Tethered Chargers: These units come with a built-in charging cable. They’re convenient—just park up and plug in. However, the attached cable can make the unit bulkier.
  • Untethered Chargers: These do not have a fixed cable, so you’ll need to use your car’s own charging lead each time. They’re often less expensive to install but may require a bit more effort with each use.

How long does it take to charge an EV at home?

  • Home chargers typically range from 3.6kW to 22kW.
  • A 3.6kW charger adds around 11 miles of range per hour of charging.
  • A 7.4kW charger delivers about 22 miles per hour.
  • 22kW chargers can provide up to 61 miles per hour, but only some EVs are compatible with this faster rate—most home vehicles are limited to 11kW charging.

Smart charging

Using a smart home EV charger allows you to schedule charging during off-peak periods, typically overnight. This can:

  • Save you money with lower energy rates
  • Ease pressure on the electricity grid by avoiding peak times
  • Help preserve your car's battery health by avoiding continuous rapid charging

Some smart chargers even integrate with smart tariffs, automatically charging your car when electricity is cheapest and greenest.
