Supported accommodation provision for young people (16 to 25 years)
16+ supported accommodation
We can arrange a safe, good-quality, temporary home for homeless 16 to 17 year olds, children in our care (looked after children) aged 16 to 17, vulnerable 18 to 21 year olds and care experienced young people aged 16 to 25 years who do not have a safe and stable place to live. This is called 16+ supported accommodation.
While living in supported accommodation, young people are supported to build skills and confidence so that they are prepared for living independently when they move out.
We (the council) work with the following housing providers:
- Bright Futures Accommodation
- Framework Housing Association
- Nottingham Community Housing Association
- New Roots Housing
- YMCA (Robin Hood Group)
- P3 Housing
- Young People First
- Avantis Living
- Brightside Care
- TM Healthcare
The 16+ supported accommodation model is tailored to meet the needs of different populations with specific support for children in our care, care experienced young people, young parents and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people.
Types of supported accommodation
The 16+ supported accommodation model includes different elements of provision to suit different needs as detailed below.
Solo accommodation
There are a small number of solo provisions which provide intensive support for looked after children aged 16 to 17 whose specific needs mean they are unable to live with other young people. Homes are staffed 24 hours a day and young people usually stay a maximum of six months.
Core Plus accommodation
Usually a three or four bedroom shared home for looked after children aged 16 to 17 years with staff support 24 hours a day. Young people usually stay a maximum of six months.
Core accommodation
Typically larger shared homes with a lower staff to young person ratio than core plus.
Cluster accommodation
Shared or solo provision in the community. Staff do not live on site but are contactable at any time. Support packages will be tailored to the young person’s needs but will typically include several support visits per week.
Floating (tenancy) support
Ongoing staff support for young people after they move into their own home to continue helping with getting into education, work or training, budgeting for bills, and registering with a doctor or dentist. This support will be tailored to the individual young person’s needs.
Accessing 16+ supported accommodation
If a young person needs a place to live, they should contact someone straight away for help.
This could be:
- their school or college
- their local district or borough council
- Nottinghamshire County Council Children’s Social Care or Nottingham City Council
- A professional (for example a social worker or personal advisor)
If there are no other alternative housing options for the young person, a professional will complete an A1 referral form with the young person which should be emailed to: homelessness.list@nottscc.gov.uk or completed on our recording system.
The 16+ supported accommodation team will check the form and respond appropriately to the professional who completed the form to discuss next steps.
Before moving into supported accommodation young people may have the opportunity to visit the home and make sure they are comfortable.
