About this course

  • Do you have only the vaguest idea about Shakespeare and his works?
  • Did you hate Shakespeare at school and leave him behind with relief?
  • Have you ever wondered if you missed something that you might have enjoyed?
  • Are you only familiar with quotes from Shakespeare’s plays but not the plays themselves?
  • Did you love Shakespeare’s language at school and want to look at the plays as an adult?
  • Do you just love thinking about Shakespeare?

You are welcome however much or little you know about Shakespeare!

What will be covered on the course?

  • We will look at six plays and ask simple questions, such as:
  • what’s going on?
  • what do they tell us about human nature?
  • what feelings and actions do we identify with?
  • why are they still such an important part of our culture?
  • should they be?

We will also pay attention to the language and look closely at some of the most important speeches.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • You will have had an enjoyable experience sharing ideas and experiences with others in a supportive atmosphere.
  • You will be aware of the importance of Shakespeare’s language and ideas to the development of the English language and ideas.
  • You will have had a taste of six plays and the confidence to tackle some of the others.
  • You will be familiar with ways of looking at plays.
  • You will be able to quote from Shakespeare with confidence.

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • You only need to be interested and curious to join this course.

You will feel welcome whether you’ve read all or none of the plays we look at.

These will be:

  • Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Romeo and Juliet
  • Macbeth
  • Julius Caesar
  • Hamlet
  • And one other that we choose together.
