What are the aims of the course?   

  • Discover how much Latin you already know and use. 
  • Add a little to that knowledge. 
  • Read and enjoy a little Latin Literature. 
  • Understand a little more about English grammar. 
  • Experience the joys of working collaboratively in a group. 
  • Exercise your brain. 
  • Participate in a supportive and lively social experience.

 What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • What you don’t know you already know. Latin words we use in English but we’re not quite sure what they mean. 
  • Where 70% of our English words come from. 
  • A little grammar -just enough to understand how a Latin sentence works. 
  • Phrases and mottoes to delight you and impress your friends. 
  • A little history of the Roman Empire and the Latin language. 
  • Little extracts from major Roman writers.  

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • A little understanding of Latin 
  • A knowledge of a substantial number of word derivations. 
  • A little bit more about English grammar.  
  • You will feel ready to take on A little More Latin or be happy with what you have achieved. 
  • You may be able to answer questions on University Challenge. 
  • You will have recovered from any difficult experiences of learning Latin at school. 
  • You will feel confident that you can learn a new skill. 
  • You will have had a lot of fun. 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

This course is for beginners, learners who have done a little Latin at school and think they’ve forgotten it all and those looking for a new and enjoyable activity in a lively and supportive group. No prior knowledge required, even though everybody knows more than they think.

  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

You should be redirected to the Inspire Online Enrolment Form after completing the Eventbrite booking.  If you are not redirected, please use the link supplied in the Eventbrite booking confirmation email.


To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.


Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
