Schools that admit pupils in Year 9 and Year 10 (Atypical schools)
Most secondary schools admit pupils in Year 7.
Some schools admit pupils at the start of Year 9 or Year 10. These are known as schools with atypical admission arrangements.
Are there any in Nottinghamshire?
There are no schools with atypical admission arrangements in Nottinghamshire.
If your child is due to start Year 9 or Year 10 in September 2027, we will write to you with information about University Technical Colleges (UTCs) and Studio schools in areas surrounding Nottinghamshire.
Does my child need to change schools?
No. Receiving this information does not mean that your child needs to move from their current school. If you feel their existing school is the best option for them, they can remain there.
By law, we must provide this information to parents and carers living in Nottinghamshire.
Types of schools you can consider
The schools with atypical admission arrangements are:
- university technical colleges (UTCs)
- studio schools
These schools offer alternative pathways alongside recognised qualifications and may be worth considering if they suit your child's interests and aspirations.
University Technical Colleges (UTC)
University technical colleges are schools set up by universities and businesses. They specialise in one or two technical subjects.
They were established by the government to encourage young people to study technical subjects and sciences. They also help young people develop the skills employers are looking for.
UTCs offer:
- GCSEs alongside technical qualifications at Key Stage 4
- A levels alongside technical qualifications at Key Stage 5
Studio schools
Studio schools offer a combination of academic and vocational qualifications.
Learning is often delivered through project-based work alongside work experience opportunities. Pupils work with local employers and follow a curriculum designed to help them gain the skills and qualifications they need for employment or further education.
To help inform your decision on whether this type of school is the right choice for your child, you should:
- consider the GCSE curriculum offered at your child's current school
- speak to the Careers Leader at your child's current school
- get further advice from the National Careers Service.
