Data Protection Complaints
Nottinghamshire County Council is committed to protecting your personal information and handling it lawfully, fairly, and transparently.
If you are concerned about how we have used your personal information, you can raise a complaint with us.
When to use this process
You should use the data protection complaint route if:
- you think we have not handled your personal information correctly
- you are unhappy with how we responded to a Subject Access Request or another information rights request you've made
- you are dissatisfied with our response to a data breach or incident
How to submit a complaint (temporary arrangements)
We are currently developing an online form to make it easier to submit a data protection complaint.
In the meantime, please use the options below:
Request a review of an information rights request
If your complaint relates to how we handled your:
- Subject Access Request (SAR)
- request for rectification, erasure, restriction or objection
Please follow the review process outlined in our response to your request.
All other data protection complaints
For all other data protection concerns, including:
- how we have handled your personal information or applied data protection legislation
- concerns about how we have handled a reported or suspected data breach

Please include as much detail as possible about your concern so we can investigate effectively.
What happens after you submit a complaint
- Acknowledgement - we will acknowledge your complaint within 5 working days
- Initial review - we will review the information you have provided and may contact you if we need more details
- Investigation - we will investigate your concerns. This may involve working with relevant Council services
- Response - we aim to provide a full written response within 3 months of receiving your complaint
- Outcome - our response will explain our findings and any actions we have taken
We take all data protection complaints seriously and will handle your complaint fairly and in accordance with data protection legislation.

How we will use your information
When you submit a complaint, we ask for personal information such as your name and contact details. We use this information to:
- respond to your complaint
- investigate the issues you have raised
- identify you if you contact us again
We may share your information with relevant Council services where necessary to investigate your complaint.

If you remain dissatisfied
You have the right to contact the UK's data protection regulator at any time. However, they usually expect you to give us the opportunity to resolve your concern first.
