Normanton on Soar chain ferry
Tucked away in one of the most southerly points of our wonderful county is Normanton on Soar, a picturesque village which sits on the River Soar and is home to Britain’s only remaining hand-pulled chain ferry.
The river, which separates Robin Hood County from Leicestershire, is enjoyed by walkers, boaters, canoeists – with the ferry boat a firm favourite with visitors to the idyllic Rushcliffe village.
A ferry has operated at the site for more than 800 years, but the chain ferry itself can be traced back to the late 18th century and is the last chain ferry still operating in Nottinghamshire.
This rare and unique transport provides visitors with a timeless view of St James Parish Church, offering a stunning backdrop for brides and grooms who want to capture the perfect image on their big day.
The ferry, which can carry up to 10 passengers, is operated by a team of volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the ferry’s upkeep, with support from the parish council, and operate crossings between 10am-4.30pm every weekend from 1 April to 30 September.
- Groups in the week can book a crossing by contacting 07487 252784
- fares cost £1 per person each way
- 50p per bike and dog, each way.
Visitors to the chain ferry are asked to show consideration to those who live close to the attraction and should follow the brown tourist signs from Main Street.
