Target audience
Leaders and managers with supervisory responsibilities and safeguarding designated persons in early years private, voluntary and independent settings including childminders.
About this course
The Nottinghamshire Early Years Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Network provides a termly opportunity for DSLs to strengthen and develop their safeguarding leadership through updates, learning, reflection, professional discussion and peer support. Attendance at all termly network sessions over a two-year period will support DSLs in maintaining their knowledge and skills, meeting EYFS statutory requirements for ongoing DSL training, and promoting a strong safeguarding culture that protects and supports all children.

Course Aim
To enable Early Years DSLs to maintain and enhance their safeguarding knowledge, skills and leadership through regular engagement with Nottinghamshire safeguarding updates, local procedures, multi-agency learning and reflective practice, ensuring effective safeguarding arrangements within their settings
Learning Objectives
By participating in the termly Nottinghamshire Early Years DSL Network programme over a two-year period, participants will be able to:
• Promote and sustain a strong safeguarding culture within their setting.
• Apply Nottinghamshire safeguarding procedures and work effectively with local safeguarding partners and statutory services.
• Develop, implement and review effective safeguarding policies and procedures.
• Support and challenge practitioners to improve safeguarding practice and outcomes for children.
• Apply safer recruitment principles and oversee safe workforce practices.
• Make appropriate referrals and escalate concerns in line with EYFS and local procedures.
• Manage concerns and allegations against adults working with children appropriately.
• Promote online safety and respond to emerging safeguarding risks.
• Apply learning from local and national updates, reviews and safeguarding developments to continuously improve practice.
• Maintain their knowledge, skills and competence as a DSL through ongoing professional development and peer networking.
This set of objectives ensures that attendance across the full programme provides ongoing development in all areas required of an Early Years Designated Safeguarding Lead, while maintaining a clear focus on Nottinghamshire's local safeguarding arrangements, priorities and procedures.
