Testing for people who have symptoms of Covid-19

Last updated: Monday 28 March 2022

Please note that symptomatic community testing sites close on Wednesday 30 March.

If you have symptoms you should get a PCR test as soon as you can. Even if you have mild symptoms you should still get tested. Symptoms include:

  • a high temperature
  • a new, continuous cough
  • loss of sense of smell or taste or it’s changed

You can order a PCR test kit to be sent to your home or you can book an appointment at a walk-in or drive-through test site. Tests can be booked online or by calling 119.

Self-isolation changes

From 24 February:

  • You will no longer be legally required to self-isolate if you test positive for Covid-19. New guidance will advise people who test positive to stay at home and avoid contact with other people
  • You will no longer be legally required to self-isolate if you are an unvaccinated close contact, and will no longer be advised to test for seven days if you are a fully vaccinated close contact. New guidance will set out precautions for reducing risk to yourself and others.

Covid-19 has not gone away and you are urged to follow the guidance to reduce the risk to yourself and others.

Testing within 90 days of a positive PCR test

If you have previously received a positive Covid-19 PCR test result, you are not usually advised to be re-tested within 90 days of this result.

However, you should have a PCR test within 90 days of a previous positive PCR test if:

  • you develop any new symptoms of Covid-19
  • or you are required to take a PCR test upon entry into the UK

Testing within 90 days of a positive PCR result

If you are tested within 90 days of a positive PCR test result for either of these reasons, and the PCR test result is positive, you are advised to self-isolate and follow the stay at home guidance.

You can find further guidance for household contacts and guidance for non-household contacts of people with confirmed Covid-19 infections.
