Support for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing

Our Adult Deaf and Visual Impairment Service (ADVIS) supports adults aged 18 and over who are Deaf or hard of hearing and live in Nottinghamshire.

Our staff understand a range of communication needs, including British Sign Language (BSL) and Deafblind Manual.

How we can help

We can visit you and:

  • provide information and advice about hearing loss
  • give advice to help you stay safe and independent at home
  • provide advice about specialist equipment
  • advise where you can buy additional equipment
  • assess your rehabilitation, care and support needs

For example, if you wear hearing aids or are Deaf, would you hear your smoke alarm during the day or at night?

We work closely with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, who may be able to install an adapted smoke alarm.

Support to help you stay independent

Enablement support can help you stay as independent as possible if hearing loss is making everyday tasks more difficult.

We may be able to provide specialist equipment and practical support to help you live independently at home and in your community.

Support to achieve your goals

Our Promoting Independence Workers (PIWs) work with Deaf and deafblind people who use sign language.

They work with people in their homes and communities to help them achieve personal goals.

Support is available for up to 12 weeks.

PIWs can help you:

  • learn new skills
  • become more confident travelling independently
  • find social opportunities
  • use technology
  • improve skills in the home
