Whether you have read the novel or not, enjoy a page to screen adaptation of a classic working-class story on the big screen at Beeston Library, with an introduction by writer Andrew Graves, author of Welcome to the Cheap Seats: Silver Screen Portrayals of the British Working Class. Set in the industrial streets and factories of Nottingham, the hard-living Arthur Seaton (Albert Finney) spends his days at the factory bench, his evenings in the local pubs and his nights in the arms of Brenda, the wife of a fellow factory worker. But when he meets Doreen, he is forced to reconsider his devil-may-care attitude. Based on Alan Sillitoe’s largely autobiographical novel, the film won the BAFTA for Best British Film and Most Promising Newcomer for Albert Finney. It’s ranked 14th in the BFI’s top 100 British Films of the 20th Century.
