About this course

This course id delivered as part of the Miner2Major scheme, which aims to reconnect local people to Sherwood Forest’s sense of place, varied landscapes and cultural heritage.  In this course, you will be taught how to paint birds. You will complete several small paintings in acrylic based on a photo reference. Working from photographs, tuition is provided through a mixture of demonstrations and exercises according to your needs, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of nature painting.  No prior experience required - suitable for beginners.

During your course, our professional art tutor will support you with:

  • Understanding the properties of the materials. How to select and use them

By the end of this course you  will know how to use the acrylic paint to depict different birds. The course is aimed to give you a good understanding of the processes by using examples and demonstrations.

  • Prepare the painting surface
  • Make a’ stay-wet palette’ and how to layout a palette
  • Experiment with colour by mixing the paint  on your surface and on palette
  • Working out innovative, dynamic compositions 
  • Using a bright, colourful palette, with dynamic and bold mark making
  • Painting techniques: impasto, scumbling, sgrafitto and blending
  • Resource requirements:
  • 30 x 40 cm Stretched canvas/ Canvas board, 
  • acrylic paper/sketch pad, 
  • Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Titanium White acrylic paint, 
  • white acrylic gesso, 
  • palette, 
  • glycerin, 
  • spray bottle, 
  • a range of synthetic paint brushes, 
  • graphite pencils,  
  • metal palette knife, 
  • silicone spatula, 
  • baby wipes, 
  • cotton rags.
