About this course

This is a beginner level course for people wanting to learn the basics of photo editing: retouching and enhancing photographs and creating photo composites. GIMP is a free photo editing program with most of the features of expensive, high-end programs like Photoshop. 

What will be covered on the course?   

• Use of basic selection tools 
• Scaling images and changing canvas size 
• Use of basic brushes 
• Removing common blemishes (red eye, dust flecks, spots etc...) 
• Enhancing colours 
• ‘Cutting out’ selections and removing backgrounds. 
• Composite images using elements from several photos 
• Layers and masks

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

•  Learners will be able to improve their own photos and construct artistic composites from multiple pictures 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

• Learners should have some experience of using a computer and be comfortable using a mouse, trackpad or other pointing device. Good hand/eye coordination helps! 

Learners will require-

A USB memory stick, if learners want copies of their work to take home

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
