About the Active Travel Fund

The government’s Active Travel Fund (ATF) has been set up to support the Gear Change strategy and to provide funding to support local authorities in implementing measures which will benefit walking and cycling. The Government is keen to encourage more active travel and see an increase in the number of trips made by walking or wheeling. Since the introduction of the Active Travel Fund in 2020 the county council has been developing and delivering schemes across the county.  Below is a list of schemes which the county council has successfully bid for and are in their development phase.

Tranche 5

The government awarded the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) £1,698,416 from its latest funding round, Tranche 5. As a constituent authority of EMMCA, we were awarded £493,619 and we are now looking to deliver the following schemes;

  • A60 Loughborough Road, Bunny - Pedestrian refuge.
  • A638 London Road, Retford - Toucan crossing.
  • B6006 Wollaton Road, Beeston - Puffin crossing.
  • B6030 (east of the B6034), Edwinstowe - Pedestrian crossing facility at junction.
  • Cavendish Drive, Carlton - Pedestrian refuge and junction narrowing.

The above schemes are in their development phase and are subject to the necessary design, consultation and approval processes.

Tranche 4 and Tranche 4 extension

In May 2023, the Government announced that for Tranche 4 we had been awarded £1.1million to improve Baulk Lane in Stapleford and connections to it. Work started on site on 12 January 2026 to install a new toucan crossing over Nottingham Road between Baulk Lane and Ewe Lamb Lane. A new 20 mph speed limit will be introduced on Baulk Lane to make the route safer for cyclists and we will also resurface the road and pavements on Baulk Lane and Eleanor Crescent. Works are due to be completed in March 2026.

In August 2023, the Government announced that for Tranche 4 extension we had been awarded £370,438.  These schemes have now been constructed and you can find out more on our Active Travel Fund constructed schemes website page.

Tranche 3

In March 2022, the government announced that we had secured £4.6m from Tranche 3 of the Government’s Active Travel Fund to develop the following three schemes.

  • A612 Colwick Loop Road, Netherfield - Work started on site on 5 January 2026 to convert the existing staggered toucan crossings on the A612 and Private Road No.1 to straight crossings. The shared use footways alongside Private Road No.1 will also be widened to meet current standards. Once complete, a new toucan crossing will be constructed on Victoria Road as close to the A612 junction as it can be placed without affecting queues and delays at that junction. Again, the shared use footways on either side will be widened to meet current standards. The whole project is expected to be completed by June 2026.
  • Hamilton Road, Sutton in Ashfield – Highway improvement works will start in February 2026 on Hamilton Road between its junction with Newark Road and Coxmoor Road. The works form part of making the route a ‘mixed traffic’ street in accordance with current cycle design standards. The works will include resurfacing both the carriageway and footway, enhancing drainage, and installing new dropped kerbs. A short stretch of parking restrictions is to be introduced and the formalisation of on-street parking bays to aid traffic flow. To meet the current standards a 20mph speed limit is to be introduced to create a safer, more welcoming environment for both pedestrians and cyclists.  The works on Hamilton Road are expected to be completed by May 2026.

The DfT has also awarded us £79K to explore the potential Mini-Holland scheme in Stapleford. The funding was secured for a feasibility study to identify potential transformational cycle and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure improvements within the targeted area. Outcomes from the report will be used in determining potential future schemes.
