Barton in Fabis planning appeal
In 2024, an application was submitted to us for a sand and gravel quarry at Barton in Fabis.
The proposal would involve extracting around 2.55 million tonnes of sand and gravel from the site. After quarrying has finished, the land would be restored to create a range of wildlife habitats.
A separate but identical application was also submitted to Nottingham City Council because a small part of the site is within the city boundary.
Planning application decisions
In December 2025, Planning and Rights of Way Committee refused planning permission for the proposal.
Nottingham City Council has yet to make a decision on its application.
Appeals and public inquiry
The applicant has appealed against our decision to refuse planning permission. The applicant has also appealed against Nottingham City Council not making a decision on its application.
Both appeals will be considered by an independent inspector from the Planning Inspectorate, acting on behalf of the Secretary of State.
The appeals will be decided through a public inquiry.
The Council has now received formal notification from the Planning Inspectorate regarding the appeal with the start date of the appeal process confirmed as 29 September 2026. The public inquiry is scheduled to commence on 18 May 2027 and is expected to last for 12 days.
