Residents are being asked for their views on a plan which sets out potential improvements to cycling and walking networks across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as part of a plan to connect communities, deliver cross boundary routes and improve facilities in the area.

Nottinghamshire County Council has been working in partnership with Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council and Nottingham City Council to develop a D2N2 wide Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) which will help secure investment in cycling and walking routes over the next 15 years.

The proposed network includes both new cycle links and improvements to existing routes to create a cohesive network and provide cycling and walking environments that are appealing to all. The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) will then be used to support funding bids to help develop and deliver the proposed schemes.

A full list of the areas identified for potential cycle route improvements can be viewed online at D2N2 Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan – Public Engagement (consultation.ai) and the consultation, funded from the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Capability Fund, will run until 8 March 2023.

Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We have a bold vision for cycling and walking in the county and want to help people change their travel habits to get out and about and become more active, especially for short journeys.

“There are so many benefits to walking and cycling, including cleaner air, improved health and wellbeing, and less congested roads.

“Therefore, we are committed to improving the cycling and walking infrastructure in Nottinghamshire as part of this wider drive to help embed walking and cycling into people’s everyday routine.

“I would urge residents who want to play a positive role in helping us make Nottinghamshire an even better place to live, work and bring up your family to have their say. We look forward to hearing your views.”

Councillor Carolyn Renwick, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, said: “Providing more opportunities for walking and cycling as part of our daily lives can help to bring benefits for people’s health as well as the environment.

“We’ve identified where we would like to see investment in cycling and walking improvements over the next 15 years, to connect communities within Derbyshire, link to neighbouring areas over the border, and improve facilities for local residents and visitors whether for everyday journeys or leisure. Now we would like to know what people think about the Plan and its joint ambitions.”

Councillor Steve Hassall, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Decarbonisation, Strategic Planning and Transport at Derby City Council said: “We are committed to giving the citizens of Derby greater transport options, which means enhancing our cycling and walking infrastructure to make routes accessible to everyone.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for those who will be using these routes to share their thoughts and help shape our delivery programme. I would encourage everyone who walks and cycles in the city to get involved and have their say so that we can work to make cycling and walking in Derby as easy and enjoyable as possible.”

Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Parks, Councillor Audra Wynter, said: “We really want as many people as possible to take part in this consultation - we want to hear from everyone about active travel - it is more important than ever as we aim to reach our extremely ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2028.

“This strategy will go a long way to making Nottingham a healthier, cleaner and more inclusive place to live and work in.”
