Tour of Britain parking and road closures information

Wednesday, 23 August 2023

Spectators attending the Nottinghamshire stage of the Tour of Britain are being asked to take note of parking and road closure information with the event just two weeks away.

The Tour of Britain will return to Nottinghamshire on Wednesday 6 September and will see some of the biggest names in cycling race from Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre to Newark-on-Trent, taking in communities including Worksop, Harworth, Boughton, Tuxford and Collingham in between.

For the start of the race, the usual £5 parking charge will be in place at the Sherwood Forest car park on the day and spectators will be able to access the car park until 10:45am. The car park will close should it reach full capacity before 10:45am.

Spectators are being asked to remember that the car park will remain closed until noon to allow for the safe departure of team vehicles from the site but that community events will be taking place at Sherwood Forest for them to enjoy after the riders depart at 11:15am.

Motorists are also reminded that road closures will be in place from 4am on the day on Swinecote Road/Church Street (B6034), between the junction with Worksop Road (A616) and Mansfield Road/Ollerton Road (A6075).

This closure means that drivers wishing to access the car park will need to follow the diversion route via Worksop Road and the north of Swinecote Road. Access on the day to Swinecote road from Worksop Road will be for the Sherwood Forest car park only and will not be open to through traffic.

Parking on verges and in laybys on the day will not be permitted and drivers are urged to take note that any vehicles parked in this way may be removed to ensure the safety of riders and spectators.

In Edwinstowe, the following roads will be closed:

  • Swinecote Road/Church Street (B6034), between the junction with Worksop Road (A616) and Mansfield Road/Ollerton Road (A6075).

In Newark, where the stage will end, the following roads will be closed during the day:

  • The B6166, Victoria Street and Portland Street,
  • Boundary Road, from the B6166 through to the Hawton Road roundabout, except for access up to 11:00am,
  • A section of Hawton Road from the Boundary Road roundabout to St Catherine's Close will be closed from 11am to 5pm,
  • Part of Lombard Street will be closed from 13:30 through to 16:00.

Councillor John Cottee, Cabinet Member for Communities at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “There’s not long to go now until the Tour of Britain returns to Nottinghamshire and we’re really excited to host this fantastic event once again.

“We know that many people across Nottinghamshire and from beyond will be excited to come and watch 120 riders depart from the world-famous Sherwood Forest and so we wanted to remind them of a few pieces of key information before the big day.

“We’re hopeful that everyone will take note of our advice, particularly when it comes to not parking on verges and in laybys. Sherwood Forest and its surrounding area have a special conservation significance and so we cannot emphasise enough that parking in this way will not be permitted.

“I hope that you will join me in cheering on those taking part by lining the streets to welcome them to our great county.”
