Nottinghamshire County Council is once again supporting the Festival of Science and Curiosity (6-17 February) to help celebrate learning and discovery through fun, hands-on activities
The festival team has been working with the County Council to deliver a wide range of family-friendly events across Nottinghamshire, most of which are free, including a whole host of workshops in libraries as well as events at venues such as Mansfield Museum, Southwell Minster, The Museum of Timekeeping, in Newark and Bennerley Viaduct, near Awsworth
One highlight will be the Science Fun Day at Bridge Skills Hub in Worksop (Tuesday 14 Feb, 10am – 2pm), youngsters will have a chance to learn about fusion energy and its potential thanks to experts from the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
West Burton A, near Retford will be the home of a prototype site for this cutting-edge, low-carbon energy on a commercial scale. Fusion has the potential to create a virtually limitless source of clean electricity by copying the processes that power the sun and stars.
Nottinghamshire County Councillor Keith Girling, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Strategic Asset Management, describes why it was vital for the council to continue supporting the festival. He said;
“Nottinghamshire has always been a county for innovation, but we now have even more reason to be at forefront of science and technology."
“Our county is set to be home to a prototype site for cutting-edge, low-carbon energy. And what’s even more exciting is that this could commercially be a world-first."
“As global energy demand continues to grow, this technology, known as fusion, is expected to play a crucial role in helping to achieve net zero emission."
“I’m delighted that festivalgoers will have the chance to discover more about this once-in-a lifetime project as well as all the other fascinating events and workshops are due to take place up and down the county, including at our own libraries."
“ I’m sure the festival will continue to inspire the innovators of the future, as well as being a general celebration of science which people of all ages can enjoy.”
