Parents in Nottinghamshire with children who have just started Year 6 are being reminded to apply for secondary school places for the upcoming year.

Last year, 98% of families who applied on time were offered a place at one of their preferred schools. However, applying late or listing only one preference can reduce your child's chances of attending a school close to your home.

The council is encouraging parents to use all four preferences when applying for their child's school place.

Councillor Hana John, the Cabinet Member for Education & Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), stated: “Transitioning to secondary school is a significant milestone in any young person’s educational journey. Here are some important points to consider when submitting your application.

"Using all four preferences gives your child a better chance of being offered a school that you would be pleased for them to attend.

"Be sure to apply before the deadline to maximise your chances of securing one of your preferred schools.”

When applying for schools, parents should keep the following points in mind:
1. Apply on time
Make sure to submit your application by Friday, 31 October. Late applications significantly decrease the chances of your child being offered a place at one of their preferred schools, as most places will be filled on National Offer Day by those who applied on time.

2. Check the admission oversubscription criteria
When selecting schools, include those where your child will have a high priority based on the admission oversubscription criteria. You can find information about these criteria for Nottinghamshire schools on the council’s website. Each secondary school in Nottinghamshire has its own set of oversubscription criteria, which can vary.

3. Use all four preferences
To enhance the likelihood of getting your child into a school they will be happy with; it is essential to use all four preferences available on the application form.

4. Include relevant information
In your application, make sure to mention any details that may affect how the admission oversubscription criteria are applied. If you are moving house, inform the council, as this may influence the consideration of your application. It is crucial to read the relevant sections in the Admissions to Schools: Guide for Parents 2026-2027, available at: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/admissions
