A disused former care home is set to be transformed into much-needed housing following a successful deal between Nottinghamshire County Council and Broxtowe Borough Council.

The site in Church Street in Eastwood, had stood empty and in significant disrepair since the care home closed in May 2024, was originally due to be sold as part of the Council’s standard disposal process, with no interest from other public bodies. However, this would have meant uncertainty about the future use of the site and as such collaborative discussions with Broxtowe Borough Council about the options were held, to enable them to consider purchasing the site.

Councillor James Walker-Gurley, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and  Asset Management, said he was determined to secure a better outcome for Eastwood.

“The original recommendation was to take the site via a standard disposal process, but there was no guarantee we would get the type of development Eastwood needs. By working closely with Broxtowe Borough Council Leader Milan Radulovic, we were able to agree a more positive route that protects the future of the site and delivers real community benefit. Not only does the deal work financially for both parties, but it also ensures the land will be used for something genuinely valuable to local people.”

Subject to planning permission Broxtowe Borough Council is now planning to build four affordable homes and one bungalow for older residents, helping to meet local demand for suitable housing.

Councillor Walker-Gurley added:

“This is exactly the kind of housing Eastwood needs. It’s a great example of how working commercially while thinking about long-term social value can deliver real results for our community. It's a tangible win for Eastwood, and I’m delighted to have played a key role in making it happen.”

Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, said:

“We’re pleased to have worked collaboratively with Nottinghamshire County Council and Cllr Walker-Gurley to acquire this long-unused site. Eastwood needs more affordable and specialist housing, and this deal allows us to move forward with a project that will make a real difference.”

“Eastwood is in need of more affordable housing and we’re excited to be able to progress this project and look ahead to the next steps"
