A consultation has been announced in relation to Dean Hole Church of England Primary School, in Caunton, as part of moves to secure the best possible education for children and make better use of public funds.
Following detailed analysis and consultation, Nottinghamshire County Council will publish a statutory notice proposing the closure of the school and begin a four-week consultation period. This decision reflects concerns about the school’s long-term viability, including persistently low pupil numbers and a growing financial deficit projected to continue into future years.
Peter McConnochie, the county council's Director for Education and Inclusion, said:
“Our focus is on making sure every child in Nottinghamshire can access high-quality education in a setting that is sustainable for the future. Despite considerable efforts to secure the school’s long-term future, pupil numbers have continued to fall.
“Responses from parents and key stakeholders indicate support for closing the school and arranging suitable alternative provision for the ten pupils currently enrolled.
“We understand that change can feel unsettling, and we appreciate the commitment shown by staff and families. Their engagement is vital as we work together to keep pupils’ education and wellbeing at the heart of this process.”
The move is in step with the council’s small schools sustainability strategy, which aims to support rural education while addressing the financial and operational pressures faced by very small schools.
The strategy was developed in partnership with headteachers, education trusts and national associations to balance community needs with the responsibility to deliver value for money.
The proposed closure would take effect following the statutory process, with the council working closely with families to secure alternative places that meet children’s needs. The council remains committed to supporting affected staff and pupils throughout the transition.
The consultation period will begin after the decision has been ratified and further information about how to take part will be published and communicated to all concerned.
