Foster carers from across the county have been celebrated at a summer fete organised by Nottinghamshire County Council’s fostering service.

More than 150 people, including families and staff, enjoyed an afternoon of summer fun at Colwick Hall Hotel - making the most of the free ice cream on offer while listening to the musical delights of The Ooh La La’s.

Those in attendance could also have a live portrait painted of them by local artist, Sarah Leaton, known as Tea Bear Illustrations.

Talking about the afternoon fun, Hayley Peck, who has been a foster carer for 14 years, said: “Wow. I was really surprised when we walked in, it is nice that the children have been involved in coming today.”

There are over 950 children, in Nottinghamshire alone, who may need foster care at any given time. Foster carers provide essential support to children and young people in the county.

Dawn Clements, a foster carer part of the Mockingbird programme, said: “The event is brilliant, it makes us feel appreciated. There are singers, ice creams and a barbecue, just for us to get together, chill and be appreciated.”

Children of all ages made the most of the games and toys set up around the marquee, with the majority loving playing with the balloons on display. Another big hit was the barbecue, fresh fruit and cakes on offer.

Paula Hancock, another foster carer part of the Mockingbird programme, said: “It is lovely that they put these on, it is great to come together. We get to see people from the Mockingbird programme and also people you only see at training. The ice cream van was a great idea!”

Earlier in the summer, birth children of Nottinghamshire foster carers had a fantastic day out to Drayton Manor. Children, young people and staff braved the hot weather and had lot of fun taking on the rides together.

It has been a summer of fun for everyone involved with the fostering service.

Speaking at the summer fete, Jenny Whiston, head of service for fostering, residential and secure accommodation, said: “Our foster carers offer an amazing opportunity for local children by providing them a place to live when they need it most.

“Afternoons like this one are just one way of thanking them for the support they provide children and young people in Nottinghamshire. It has been great to see all the families and children coming together and enjoying the games, food and the disco.

“I’d also like to thank the team for putting this great event together. It really has been a wonderful afternoon.”
