The last few months have been really interesting for me as I’ve taken on the role of helping oversee economic development across the county.
I have to say just how exciting this time is for Nottinghamshire when it comes to investment and growth.
North Nottinghamshire has a proud history of powering the UK, and now we’re looking to the future with an incredible world-class site right here, that could help power the rest of the world.
The UK’s fusion energy programme is based at West Burton near Retford, on the old coal station site. It’s called STEP Fusion, and by 2040 a prototype fusion power plant is planned to be built there. It could completely change how we generate energy.
I recently met with the STEP Fusion team alongside some fellow councillors, and what really stood out is the scale of opportunity. We’re talking thousands of skilled jobs, not just in science and construction, but everything from catering to security. There will be opportunities all round.
The economic impact is huge too. A report we commissioned shows that at its peak, more than 6,500 jobs a year could go to local people, and the economy could see a boost of between £86 million and £210 million every year for the next 40 years.
It’s already making a difference. Colleges and universities are expanding courses linked to fusion technology, and the STEP team is out in schools inspiring the next generation about the careers that will be right here on their doorstep.
I’m really looking forward to being more involved as this project develops. Having this site in Nottinghamshire is a massive win, and as a county council we’ll make sure our residents feel the full benefit.
