This April at Surface Gallery, Reflection asks, what is portraiture today?
Chosen from over 300 submissions, the exhibition will showcase a selection of contemporary art from across the world. Reflection features 27 artworks by 14 artists that expand the definition of portraiture. A variety of approaches, from experimenting with different media to using diverse presentation methods, offer a refreshing perspective on what constitutes a portrait.
The exhibition features moving image artwork by two artists. Di Hu's work explores the question of how cinema represents portraits via analysis of 51 English-speaking films from the 1930s to the 1950s, while Eric Fong's work seeks to question what constitutes beauty, identity and difference.
In a media saturated world, where we are constantly assailed by a stream of visual information, Reflection asks the viewer to become involved with the experience of looking. Surface Gallery will be the stage where different media can be utilised to explore and understand both ourselves and others. Take a step back, reflect, and consider the enduring attraction of portraiture.
The Opening Night will feature portrait poetry by one of the selected artists, Charlie Gualtieri. Portrait poetry takes huge inspiration from the visual arts and the history of the portrait form. These performative pieces will be given equal weight alongside the physical portraits on display.
Reflection will open in the Main Gallery in conjunction with Made for You? A solo exhibition by Matthew Kel, which will take place in the Project Space. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
