Transitions
Why transition matters
Starting school, moving to secondary school and planning for post-16 are big milestones. While many children find change challenging, children in care may have already experienced a number of changes in their lives, sometimes suddenly and without much preparation.
That is why a planned, supportive transition matters. It gives children the chance to experience change in a positive way, with time to prepare, say goodbye to trusted adults and familiar places, and feel ready for what comes next.
Our offer
We support children in care at key stages of their education, particularly when they are:
- Starting Reception
- moving from Year 6 to Year 7
- moving from Year 11 into post-16 education, employment or training.
Our transition offer includes:
- Helping to keep communication clear between carers, schools, social workers and other professionals,
- supporting transition meetings at key points,
- helping to identify when a child may benefit from an enhanced or bespoke transition,
- supporting carers where decisions need to be made about schools or provision,
- offering annual webinars and workshops for carers on applications, key dates, offer days, and how to prepare children both practically and emotionally for change.
We aim to bring people together around the child, so that transitions are joined up, well planned and centred on their needs.
We are continuing to develop this information and will add further useful links and resources to support children, carers and professionals.
