Become a shared lives carer

The application process

What the process involves

There are five steps in the Shared Lives application process. It usually takes around three months to complete. You will have a coordinator to support you at each stage.

Shared Lives carers are self‑employed, and you will need to register with HMRC for tax purposes.

Step 1: Application

Send us your details using the online form.

We will invite you to an information event where you can learn more about the role and ask questions.

Step 2: Assessment

We will visit your home to check it is safe and suitable.

We will also carry out:

  • reference checks
  • a DBS check
  • right-to-work checks

Step 3: Training

You will receive full training to help you become a Shared Lives carer.

Initial training includes:

  • First aid – learn how to respond in an emergency
  • Safeguarding – understand how to recognise and report abuse
  • Mental Capacity Act – learn the basics of decision‑making rights
  • Oliver McGowan training – understand how to support people with learning disabilities and autism
  • Medication management – learn how to give and record medication safely
  • Finance – understand the financial parts of the role
  • Care Certificate – learn essential skills for working in care

We will also offer regular refresher training to help you keep your skills up to date.

Step 4: Approval

Your application will be reviewed by the Shared Lives panel. They will decide whether to approve you as a Shared Lives carer.

Step 5: Matching

We will match you with someone whose needs, interests and personality suit yours.

Your coordinator will support you throughout the placement and visit every 12 weeks to check how things are going.
