What is a School Travel Plan?
- A group of actions that promotes safer, active and sustainable travel to school.
- Aims to reduce the number of children and teachers travelling to school by car.
- Aims to reduce the congestion, improve air quality and get students more active and healthy.
Process
- Let everyone know: Teachers will tell you that they are introducing a Travel Plan and explain what it is (in an assembly or in class)
- Conduct Site Audit: Teachers will look at what sustainable facilities the school already has (e.g. cycle parking).
- Conduct Travel Surveys: You will complete a ‘hands up’ Travel Survey in class to find out how everyone is currently travelling to school
- Adopt Action Plan: The school will run lots of fun activities about travel to get you walking, cycling and scooting to school more.
- Monitoring and evaluation: the school will do more ‘hands up’ Travel Survey to find out if pupils have changed how they travel
How can I help?
Get involved in as many activities as you can, and get your parents and guardians to join in as well! Older students can also become School Travel Plan Champions – ask your teachers about this.
