Parking restrictions

How can we get parking restrictions near our schools?

Parking restrictions can be introduced but they must be carefully planned. Parking restrictions designed to tackle school parking may cause problems for residents outside of school hours.

Parking restrictions can actually sometimes worsen road safety:

  • Parked vehicles can reduce vehicle speeds near schools
  • Drivers expect to see school pupils outside schools but if parents park further away from the school the child pedestrian movements are spread across a wider area
  • Parking restrictions can cause drivers to ‘rush’ and take more risks to avoid being caught, again creating a road safety hazard.

Yellow lines also allow drivers to set down and pick up passengers, so this activity is not made illegal by the introduction of double yellow lines, or a residents parking scheme will not stop parents from waiting or dropping off/picking up pupils.
