Concessionary travel passes

Renewing your travel pass

To renew your expiring travel pass, go to: buspass.nottinghamshire.gov.uk

We run the Nottinghamshire scheme and operate to national guidelines. These specify that free travel passes are available for people who qualify on grounds of age or certain forms of disability.

The national concessionary travel pass allows you to enjoy free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England. The national free entitlement operates between 9.30am and 11.00pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on public holidays. Certain services are excluded such as night buses which charge a premium fare, please check with the relevant operator before travelling.

Who can get a travel pass?

People who qualify on grounds of age or certain forms of disability are entitled to a concessionary travel pass.

You are an eligible disabled person if you:

  • are blind or partially sighted
  • are profoundly or severely deaf
  • are without speech
  • have a disability, or have suffered an injury, which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to walk
  • do not have arms or have long term loss of the use of both arms
  • have a learning disability - a state of arrested or incomplete development of mind which includes significant impairment of intelligence and social functioning, or
  • would have an application to drive a motor vehicle refused due to your disability.

The scheme no longer provides a free pass automatically at the age of 60. Instead, the qualifying age is now linked to the state pension age. To see when you will qualify for a free pass on age grounds, have a look at the government state pension age calculator on the Directgov website. You need to select the 'female' option as the qualifying criteria is based on the female pensionable age.

Additional benefits for Nottinghamshire residents

The Nottinghamshire scheme offers the following additional benefits over and above the English national scheme:

  • Free travel on the Nottingham tram (NET) between 9.30am and 4.00pm and 6.00pm and 11.00pm Monday to Friday, all day at weekends and on bank holidays. Between 4.00pm and 6.00pm Monday to Friday half fare travel is available.
  • From March 2014 there will be ticket scanners to all tram stops.  To receive free travel scan your bus pass before boarding the tram. Tram inspectors will be in operation and may ask to rescan your pass to check it was done before boarding.
  • From April 2014 the duration of free travel is being extended and will cover the whole period between 9:30am and 11pm Monday to Friday, all day at weekends and on bank holidays.
