Apply to install seasonal decorations in or above a road

If you want to install seasonal decorations (including Christmas and other decorations) in and above a road or linked (for example by an electrical connection) to a road, you must apply for permission.

Download and complete the application form [PDF] which includes terms and conditions. Once you have completed the form, return it to your local area highways office.

All applications must be submitted a minimum of 12 weeks prior to the proposed installation date.


ILP code of practice

The application form has been produced in response to the 'Code of Practice for the Installation, Operation and Removal of Seasonal Decorations' published by the Institution of Lighting Engineers. Promoters will need to obtain a copy of this Code to use as a reference when completing an application.

Contractors/installers of decorations must also carry out their work in accordance with our own 'Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management at Roadworks'.

Section 178

If an application is approved, a 'Highways Act Section 178 Licence Consent' will be issued by us, to the promoter.
