Railways in the Nottinghamshire Coalfield Course

Tuesday 5 April - Tuesday 17 May 2016 10am to 12 noon Eastwood Library £39.20 (concessionary: Free for those on means tested benefits - please bring your proof of benefit to the course with you)

Deep coal mining in Nottinghamshire came to an end in the summer of 2015 when production at Thoresby Colliery finished. This brought to an end one of the former staple industries of the county which played a major role in the history of the British Industrial Revolution. This short course will look at the link between the coal industry and railways over 200 years, starting with the horse drawn ganglines of the early 19th century through to the diesel run modern Merry Go Round (MGR) trains that ran between local pits and Trent Valley Power Stations. This course will also help participants increase their historical enquiry skills (finding, using and interpreting historical documents and accounts) and digital skills (use of interactive websites and social media).
