Approved Trader Scheme

In October 2020, Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards signed up to a new “associate” relationship with the Buy With Confidence Partnership who deliver the Buy With Confidence approved trader scheme.

Buy With Confidence is the only nationally available business approval scheme that’s owned, operated and controlled directly by a collaboration of local authority Trading Standards services. Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards supports and promotes the scheme for the benefit of Nottinghamshire residents and businesses.

Every company approved by Buy With Confidence has been fully vetted and advised by Trading Standards professionals and are only permitted onto the scheme once they’ve passed multiple checks. Once on the scheme, they continue to be monitored to ensure they are trustworthy and provide good customer service.

Checks on Buy With Confidence businesses before admission include:

  • Audit by a Trading Standards professional
  • Credit Checks
  • DBS/Criminal Record checks (if the business goes into people’s homes)
  • Intelligence database checks
  • Customer reference checks
  • Checks on their insurance and trade association memberships
  • Fair trading legal compliance checks
  • And more…

Only if a company has demonstrated its credibility and a strong track record of good trading will it be allowed to call itself Buy With Confidence – Trading Standards Approved.

Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards is committed to protecting consumers, supporting legitimate business and solving the UK’s rogue trade problem.

Trading Standards advises consumers to always be vigilant and ask for proof of identity before letting any tradesperson into their home.

If you need to verify their identity do not rely on the number they give you as it may not be genuine. Verify their identity by ringing their employer using the number listed in the phonebook or online.
