Scams affect the lives of millions of people across the UK. People who have been scammed often experience shame and social isolation as a result. Older residents, and those with care and support needs, are known to be purposely targeted, with the criminals involved sharing their details widely.
In Nottinghamshire, Trading Standards colleagues regularly work with social care colleagues as well as other agencies to support scam victims, who can face potential losses to scams in the thousands of pounds, some even losing their life savings, and to prevent further financial loss. The effects can be devastating, affecting their health, well-being and confidence to live independently, and often escalating their need for health and social care interventions.
Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from falling prey to scams by empowering communities to "Take a Stand Against Scams".
By learning more about this important issue affecting our communities and registering as “Friends” we can all help to promote scams awareness both in our work and with our friends, families and neighbours and make a difference together.
