LEADER stands for 'Liaison Entre Actions pour le Development de L’Economie Rurale' which roughly translates to 'links between actions for developing the rural economy.

The National Managing Authority for RDPE LEADER is the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Defra is responsible to the European Commission for the successful delivery of the national programme.
The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) acts as Defra’s agent in administering the financial and operational part of the Programme.
LEADER programmes are managed and championed locally by Local Action Groups (LAGs). South Nottinghamshire LAG is one of 80 nationally.
