Gaya's journey to employment

“I started on a supported internship with West Notts College in September 2023. My placement was with Gedling Borough Council doing admin. I enjoyed the work and thought this would be something I would like to do as a permanent job.

“I started a work experience with Nottinghamshire County Council in the Integrated Children’s Disability Service as a SEND intern. In October 2024 I was offered a paid position. When I was told I got the job, I felt excited, happy and proud, like I could achieve anything. My main tasks are uploading documents, spreadsheets, chasing emails and monitoring documents. I like the people and being part of a team, the conversations and seeing the same people each week. I work from home and go to the office which I like.

“Doing work experience helped me as I learnt how to do a lot of the tasks I need for my job. I attended a reverse job fair where I prepared my CV and practised interview skills with employers. I had support from i-work Nottinghamshire County Council supported employment service. Richard, my job coach, gave steps and guidance on tasks until I felt confident to do the job without him. He still checks in with me from time to time and I contact him when I have news.”

Jo Scott, Gaya's mentor added: “Since starting with our team, Gaya is becoming more confident in her role. She offers support around any IT issues we may be having and asks for help if she is not sure of how to complete a task.”
